Family violence, mental health and trauma among South Asian migrant women | MAEVe

March 8, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

The experiences of South Asian victim-survivors centred around dowry exploitation and related violence with profound mental health impacts.

What are the roles of globalisation, culture, migration, acculturation stress, in causation of family domestic violence and its impacts on mental health? Marriage is an essential, defining moment in many women’s lives, but it’s not always a happy one, be it in India or elsewhere in the world—including Australia.

The young immigrant women are particularly vulnerable. The South Asian immigrant victim-survivors in my psychiatric practice often suffer from violence that is related to dowry exploitation, triggered by lack of satisfaction with dowry amounts given at the wedding, and ongoing demands for cash, gold gifts etc , financial exploitation, and domestic servitude.

This presentation is suitable to all those interested in the family violence research and service sector e.g. mental health advocates/workers, community service providers and the general public.
