SUMMARY:Addressing Social Determinants to Improve Safety and Outcomes for Young People | NAPCAN
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the end of the year\, a time when many families experience added pressure and when children and young people can be at increased risk\, it’s more important than ever to strengthen the systems that keep them safe\, connected\, and supported.\nNAPCAN’s webinar will explore how early\, culturally safe\, trauma-aware supports can change a young person’s trajectory long before they reach crisis point\, including contact with the youth justice system.\nThis session will unpack the social determinants that shape vulnerability\, from housing and education to mental health and disability access\, and highlight practical\, evidence-informed strategies to create safer and fairer pathways for young people. SUMMARY:State Apology to the First Peoples of Victoria
DESCRIPTION:Victoria will take an important step towards addressing past injustices towards Aboriginal people and building a stronger\, united future\, with an apology to First Peoples to be made in the Victorian Parliament. \nThe apology is a key recommendation of Victoria’s nation-leading Yoorrook Justice Commission and was committed to in the first Treaty\, following the Statewide Treaty Act 2025 becoming law. \nThe Commission heard evidence that the colonisation of Victoria was marked by dispossession\, displacement and violence towards First Peoples. \nThe final report of the Yoorrook Justice Commission recommended an acknowledgement of the responsibility of predecessors for laws\, policies and practices that contributed to injustices against First Peoples in Victoria. \nThe Victorian Government has worked with the First Peoples’ Assembly to deliver the apology through the Treaty process. \nWatch the livestream here

SUMMARY:Responding to Suicides in the Context of Intimate Partner Violence | ShantiWorks
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the complex relationship between suicide and intimate partner violence\, examining the tensions\, challenges and opportunities in policy and practice. It is devastating when an intimate partner violence victim takes their own life because they are subject to such torment\, pain and entrapment. To prevent such suicides\, it is essential to strengthen coordinated responses to both victims and perpetrators. \nThrough the lens of social entrapment and coercive control\, we will explore how patterns of threat and risk posed by perpetrators of intimate partner violence can lead to suicide by victims. Using Jane Monckton-Smith’s 8-stage timeline of coerced suicide\, this workshop will encourage critical reflection and practice possibilities to strengthen risk assessment\, safety planning\, multi-agency cooperation\, and documentation. \nThis workshop will: \n\nShare current local data and evidence about intimate partner suicides.\nFacilitate learnings from Professor Jane Monckton Smith’s work on the 8-stage intimate partner suicide timeline.\nNote the ways perpetrators tactically use threats to suicide and what this means for ongoing control and entrapment in the lives of victims.\nProvide possibilities to expose social entrapment in our risk assessment to intervene and disrupt the constraints that intimate partner violence inflicts on victims\n\nRegister here
