DESCRIPTION:Protect\, Share\, Support: Understanding Family Violence in Disability Service shares the best practices from Victoria’s framework as they apply to working with people with disability\, including guidance around information sharing and privacy for organisations that are not part of Victoria’s family violence information sharing framework. \nIt draws on the best practices and latest knowledge about family violence\, as reflected in Victoria’s Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management (MARAM) framework. Topics covered: \n\nWhat is family violence? How our understanding of the spectrum of family violence has evolved over time.\nUnderstand the nature of coercive control and cumulative harm\, particularly as it may occur for people with disability.\nUsing a disability and trauma-informed lens\, we examine best practices for responding safely and respectfully to disclosures.\nWe share guidance for sharing information and seeking consultation from services that can support people experiencing family violence.\nWe share best practices for documenting and handling client concerns.\n\nLearning outcomes\n\nUnderstand the nature of family violence and the ways it can impact people with disability\nApply the best practices for responding to signs of family violence or to disclosures of family violence\nUnderstand the best practices for recording observations and disclosures of family violence and for collaborating and consulting with family violence specialist services\n\nIntended audience\nWorkers in the disability sector who may encounter clients experiencing family violence but whose organisations are not formally a part of the MARAM framework. \n

DESCRIPTION:National Child Protection Week (NCPW) is a big week for the sector and we’re very proud to be partnering with the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) for another important webinar. \nThis year we’ll be picking up the conversation from the NCPW webinar from 2023 on childhood emotional abuse. \nThe theme for NCPW 2025 is Shifting Conversations to Action. In line with this theme\, our expert panel will be focussing on practical ways we as a sector can improve our response to this harmful form of child maltreatment – particularly through parental support. \nAccording to the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS)\, approximately 35% of young people aged 16–24 have experienced emotional abuse. Findings from the ACMS also suggest the prevalence of this form of abuse is increasing with higher rates among younger cohorts (16–24 years) than among older cohorts (25–44 years and 45 years and older). \nEmotional abuse contributes to a range of social\, physical and psychological issues. However\, despite its high prevalence and associated poor outcomes\, emotional abuse remains poorly understood across much of the child and family sector. \nThis webinar will explore some of the risk factors of childhood emotional abuse\, including parental stress and burnout\, and discuss how to recognise\, respond to and prevent this form of maltreatment – with a focus of empathising with the parents you work with and understanding why they might be engaging with their children in this way. \nRegister here

From a wellbeing perspective\, we know that these children are more than twice as likely to develop mental health disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder\, anxiety\, depression and problematic alcohol consumption. \n  \nTrauma prevention and early intervention of child maltreatment approaches are critical to the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. This webinar will outline strategies that practitioners\, organisations and systems can use to contribute to trauma prevention and early intervention. DESCRIPTION:YPVITH\, Neurodiverse Affirming Practice With Young People and Their Families\, is a three-hour interactive training for professionals from all disciplines and service sectors working with neurodivergent young people using violence in the home. Building on the Centre’s Four Pillars of Practice Model for YPVITH\, the training builds on practitioners’ understanding of ADHD and autism by exploring different presentations and dispelling common myths. The training examines the links between nervous system dysregulation and aggressive behaviours.
