SUMMARY:Creating Connection Series: Understanding Young People With Autism 1 of 2 | The Centre
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is the first in a series of two. \nCreating Connection Series: Young People—Understanding Young People With Autism introduces a range of innovative techniques for better understanding\, communicating with\, and meeting the needs of young people with autism. \nThe workshop approaches the topic of autism through the lens of information—how do neurotypical people and neurodivergent people experience the world around them? It guides participants to closely examine their own sensory experience of the world—what is ‘normal’ for us\, and what do we take for granted about our own senses? \nUsing the categories in the formal definition of autism as a starting point\, we explore how each common characteristic of autism – from social awkwardness to sensory sensitivities – can be understood as different ways of processing information. We demonstrate a variety of techniques to help a non-autistic person understand what it is like to be autistic. \nLearning outcomes: \n\nUnderstand the key characteristics of autism\, drawing on the latest research\nConnect scientific knowledge about autism with outward behaviour\nAcquire a range of techniques to communicate about autism with parents and carer\n\nIntended audience: \nThis workshop is designed for practitioners who support parents and carers of children and young people with autism. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Kep Enderby Memorial Lecture 2025 | Australian Human Rights Commission
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we mark 50 years since the passage of Australia’s Racial Discrimination Act at our annual Kep Enderby Memorial Lecture. A keynote will be delivered by Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman\, followed by a lively panel discussion about legal and policy reform needed to address racism across workplaces\, and the education and justice sectors. \nPanelists will include: \n\nSally McManus\, Secretary Australian Council of Trade Unions\nJeswynn Yogaratnam\, Commissioner\, Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commissioner\nNareen Young\, Associate Dean (Indigenous Leadership & Engagement)\, Professor Indigenous Policy\, UTS Business School\,  Jumbunna Institute\n\nAbout this event \nThe Kep Enderby Memorial Lecture returns in 2025 to mark a significant milestone\, the 50th anniversary of the passage of Australia’s Racial Discrimination Act (RDA). This landmark legislation laid the foundation for racial equality in Australia\, but after half a century is it time for reform? \nThis year’s lecture will spotlight racism in workplaces and explore the structural and often invisible nature of racism. It will illustrate how legal and policy reform can drive meaningful change\, particularly with the roadmap provided by the National Anti-Racism Framework. \nA key theme will be the Race Discrimination Commissioner’s recent call for a ‘positive duty’ in the Racial Discrimination Act\, an approach that requires organisations to actively prevent racism\, not just respond to it. \nThe annual Kep Enderby Memorial Lecture advances public understanding and debate about the Racial Discrimination Act\, racism and human rights. It honours the Hon. Kep Enderby QC (1926-2015) who as Attorney-General\, introduced into Parliament the Bill which would become the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth). \nThe lecture will be delivered online via Zoom. Auslan interpretation and live captioning will be available. \nRegister here
