DESCRIPTION:Children and young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are under-identified and under-served in the family violence sector—not because they experience less violence\, but because they face additional barriers to disclosure\, recognition and access to support. \nToo often\, services focus on the adult victim-survivor while children’s experiences of family violence are treated as secondary. Mainstream child and family services may lack confidence in responding to the intersections of language\, culture\, migration and faith\, while specialist multicultural services may support the whole family but have limited child-specific resources. \nFor young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds\, family violence may not present in ways that services immediately recognise. School refusal\, anxiety\, behavioural changes\, caring responsibilities\, isolation or fears about immigration status can all be signs of distress connected to family violence. \nThis panel will explore why children from migrant and refugee backgrounds are falling through the gaps\, what gets missed when we fail to see their experiences through an intersectional lens\, and what practitioners and services can do differently to ensure children and young people are recognised\, heard and supported in their own right. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Supporting children and young people to heal from the trauma of family violence | ACF
DESCRIPTION:Children and young people do not escape family violence unaffected. It destabilises the foundations of their development and undermines the strengths of relationships around them. The work with these children and their families is complex and requires a focus on hope and relational strength as central to recovery. This workshop is grounded in the extensive practice and work within the Australian Childhood Foundation\, which is long acknowledged and respected in the family violence sector. \nChildren experience family violence deep in their mind and body – they see it\, often hear it and their bodies react to it as a threat to their survival. Experiences of family violence define what children can say when and to whom. It determines how they react and it sometimes makes the truth a secret.\nFor many children family violence disconnects them from their family\, their community and their place in the world. It forces their routines to be less certain\, less predictable.  Children experience loss as a result of family violence. They sometimes have to leave behind their home\, pets\, neighbourhood\, school – everything that is familiar. \nThis workshop explores all of these elements and supports practitioners to work in a child focused and relationally reparative context with parents and children following experiences of family violence. The Safe and Secure Practice Framework is explored and provides a map for supporting children to heal from family violence. The foundation of the framework ensures addressing the dynamics of family violence\, cultural integration\, and collaboration. Outcomes include strengthening connections\, enabling meaning making\, and promoting growth and recovery. \nThe workshop builds on the framework of the neurobiology of trauma\, specifically exploring the impact of family violence trauma within families\, and on children. The workshop offers a hope-based recovery model for engaging   children and families to begin the process of healing from family violence. This model considers the diversity of the experience of family violence and acknowledges and builds on relational strengths with a key focus on relational safety. This workshop is suitable for all practitioners working with families who have experienced family violence. \nFacilitator\nThis training is delivered by experienced professional trainers with expertise and experience in trauma informed intervention and practice. Our trainers have a strong understanding of trauma and its impact on children and families\, translating this knowledge into practice in a range of professional contexts. DESCRIPTION:We want to learn together to create possibilities to interrupt conditions of entrapment and oppression in the lives of victims-survivors (adults and children) and intentionally share responsibility for intervening and responding to domestic and family violence risk and lethality.\nAt the time of writing this flyer\, in Australia 2026:\n•26 women have been murdered due to violence against women (Counting Dead Women Australia Project).\n•36 women and 15 children murdered “based on every known Australian woman and child killed as a result of murder\, manslaughter or neglect from White Settlement to now” (Australian Femicide Watch\, 2026). \nThis is the context in which we work. These murders highlight that there is a need for all of us to keep learning.\nThis workshop invites practitioners\, leaders and teams to come together to reflect on the systems we are part of and the role we each play in responding to domestic and family violence. Together\, we will explore the assumptions\, practices and organisational responses that shape our work\, and consider how they can either create realistic safety options or further contribute to entrapment. \nDrawing on Professor Jane Monckton Smith’s 8-Stage Homicide Timeline\, we will use stories of domestic violence homicide to deepen our understanding of coercive control\, escalating risk and the points where intervention might make a difference. Each year across Victoria and around the world\, communities mobilise and draw on their own strengths to stand up for respect\, and a world free from violence. \nFunded by Respect Victoria\, the 16 Days of Activism Grassroots Initiative aims to build the capacity of Victorian organisations delivering activities under the campaign\, by delivering consistent messaging\, facilitating connection\, and providing resources and support. \nThe 2026 campaign will build on the momentum of the last two years\, and respond to insights from campaigners around the benefits of connecting with other organisations delivering work locally. As such\, to kick off this year’s campaign we will be hosting ten online Regional Convenings\, to bring together organisations working in each of the nine women’s health catchments\, and one statewide event. \nThe purpose of these sessions is to share updates on this year’s campaign\, and create a space where organisations working locally can meet\, share learnings\, and begin to plan their 2026 activities. \nPlease register for the session for your region or local area. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging webinar where researchers present the main findings from recent Australian research exploring an infant and child-led therapeutic approach delivered in situ alongside key workers supporting families identified as at risk. \n  \nThe session will draw on the article The impact of using an infant and child-led therapeutic approach in providing in situ consultations and transferable learnings to key workers working with families identified as at risk: A retrospective Australian study by Wendy Bunston\, Maureen Long\, Margarita Frederico\, Samantha Ware and Ania O’Brien. Read the article here. \nAbout the webinar \nIn this webinar\, the research team will present a case study illustrating the child-led therapeutic approach and reflect on the implications for practitioners and services working with families. The session will also consider how the model supports learning transfer to frontline workers and why child-centred\, relationship-based practice matters in everyday service contexts. \nWhy this research matters \nInfants and young children are often the reason services become involved with families experiencing risk (e.g. family violence\, child protection concerns)\, yet their voices are frequently overlooked in everyday practice. This research shows that centering infants and children\, explicitly and practically\, improves family engagement\, deepens worker empathy\, and strengthens practice\, even when time and resources are limited. \n  \nCore practice message: You do not need to be a therapist to work therapeutically.\nFrontline workers can bring a powerful infant‑ and child‑led lens into everyday interactions by slowing down\, observing\, wondering\, and keeping the child’s perspective central—with or without a specialist present. \nWhat “infant‑ and child‑led” means in practice \nAn infant‑ and child‑led approach complements (rather than replaces) safety\, case planning and statutory responsibilities. SUMMARY:How should we measure coercive control? A new tool: the Coercive-Composite Abuse Scale (C-CAS) | MAEVe
DESCRIPTION:Coercive control is a complex behavioural phenomenon where severity\, frequency\, and patterns need to be examined for an individual collectively. However\, approaches to measuring coercive control to date have demonstrated limited understanding of these patterns of behaviours by a partner or ex-partner that reflect an individual woman’s experience. Through standard instrument development\, with academic and lived experience feedback and psychometric testing\, we developed the Coercive-Composite Abuse Scale (C-CAS).  The C-CAS\, a self-report measure of coercive control experiences among women has demonstrated initial reliability and validity and is suitable for use in population or clinical studies. \n  \nRegister here
