SUMMARY:Creating Connection Series: Understanding Young People With Autism 1 of 2 | The Centre
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is the first in a series of two. \nCreating Connection Series: Young People—Understanding Young People With Autism introduces a range of innovative techniques for better understanding\, communicating with\, and meeting the needs of young people with autism. \nThe workshop approaches the topic of autism through the lens of information—how do neurotypical people and neurodivergent people experience the world around them? It guides participants to closely examine their own sensory experience of the world—what is ‘normal’ for us\, and what do we take for granted about our own senses? \nUsing the categories in the formal definition of autism as a starting point\, we explore how each common characteristic of autism – from social awkwardness to sensory sensitivities – can be understood as different ways of processing information. We demonstrate a variety of techniques to help a non-autistic person understand what it is like to be autistic. \nLearning outcomes: \n\nUnderstand the key characteristics of autism\, drawing on the latest research\nConnect scientific knowledge about autism with outward behaviour\nAcquire a range of techniques to communicate about autism with parents and carer\n\nIntended audience: \nThis workshop is designed for practitioners who support parents and carers of children and young people with autism. \nRegister here

\nLearning outcomes\n\nUnderstand the key characteristics of autism\, drawing on the latest research\nConnect scientific knowledge about autism with outward behaviour\nAcquire a range of techniques to communicate about autism with parents and carers\n\nIntended audience\nThis workshop is designed for practitioners who support parents and carers of children and young people with autism.

DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Dr Ashlee Curtis and Dr Travis Harries will discuss their recent research into substance-involved child-to-parent violence (SU-CPV). \nChild-to-parent violence (CPV) is associated with youth substance problems; however\, few studies have explored the familial context surrounding substance-involved CPV. \nKey findings from this research include associations between parental monitoring\, parental intrusiveness\, affective reactivity\, concurrent reactive CPV and SU-CPV in an Australian community sample of caregivers. \nYou can also view the associated article on parent’s substance use and child-to-parent violence. \nRegister here
