SUMMARY:Spiking – broadening understandings to improve research and responses | MAEVe and UoM Criminology
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Joint MAEVe and UoM Criminology Seminar\, where visiting Professor Nicole Westmarland presents on “Spiking – broadening understandings to improve research and responses” \nIn-person and online tickets available! \nLocation: Linkway Meeting Room\, Level 4\, John Medley Building (Building 191)\, Parkville Campus\, University of Melbourne \nOnline: Zoom link provided upon registration \nAbstract\nSpiking refers to when a person uses alcohol (including putting alcohol or more alcohol into a drink without a person’s consent)\, prescription or over- the- counter drugs (such as sleeping tablets)\, and/or illegal drugs (such as cocaine\, GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate)\, or ketamine) to drug or poison a person without their consent. Drink spiking is the most common form of spiking\, but other items including food\, cigarettes\, vapes\, and needles/syringes can also be spiked. This presentation explores how the 2021 ‘needle spiking’ concerns unfolded in the UK\, what we know about it (using police data and victim interviews)\, and how this can be used as a springboard to rethink previous and future research and responses to all forms of spiking.\n \nPresenter Bio \nNicole Westmarland is Professor of Criminology at Durham University where she is also the Director of the Durham Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA). She has conducted over 50 research and consultancy projects in the field of domestic and sexual violence. She is the author of many books and articles on violence and abuse\, including ‘Violence against Women: Criminological Perspectives on Men’s Violences’ (Routledge\, 2015)\, ‘Researching Gender\, Violence and Abuse: Theory\, Methods\, Action’ (Routledge\, 2018) and ‘Men’s Activism to End Violence Against Women’ (Policy Press\, 2021). She has held advisory roles including Special Advisor to the UK Parliament’s Joint Committee on Human Rights for their Inquiry into Violence against Women and Girls\, the Victorian (Australia) Government’s Expert Advisory Committee on Perpetrator Interventions and Advisor to the House of Commons Behaviour Code Awareness Programme. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Technology-Facilitated Abuse: Preliminary Findings of a Global Delphi Study | MAEVe
DESCRIPTION:Technology-facilitated abuse (“tech abuse”) in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV) describes an incident or a pattern of incidents in which digital systems are used with the intention to monitor\, control\, coerce\, threaten\, degrade\, and harm a victim/survivor. Tech abuse\, therefore\, intersects closely with other forms of IPV and family and domestic abuse\, as well as stalking. However\, tech abuse is not an “official” concept nor measurement category. To date\, scholars have used different terminology to describe the perpetration of abuse and harassment via digital means. In this presentation\, preliminary findings of an ongoing global Delphi study will be shared in which we examine the “boundary questions” that tech abuse creates and offers a framework to tackle the lack of agreed conceptualisation and terminological specificity. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Family violence\, mental health and trauma among South Asian migrant women | MAEVe
DESCRIPTION:The experiences of South Asian victim-survivors centred around dowry exploitation and related violence with profound mental health impacts. \nWhat are the roles of globalisation\, culture\, migration\, acculturation stress\, in causation of family domestic violence and its impacts on mental health? Marriage is an essential\, defining moment in many women’s lives\, but it’s not always a happy one\, be it in India or elsewhere in the world—including Australia. \nThe young immigrant women are particularly vulnerable. The South Asian immigrant victim-survivors in my psychiatric practice often suffer from violence that is related to dowry exploitation\, triggered by lack of satisfaction with dowry amounts given at the wedding\, and ongoing demands for cash\, gold gifts etc \, financial exploitation\, and domestic servitude. \nThis presentation is suitable to all those interested in the family violence research and service sector e.g. mental health advocates/workers\, community service providers and the general public. \nFor more information and to register\, click here
