SUMMARY:Dementia and Elder Abuse: Challenges in identification\, disclosure and response | AASW National
DESCRIPTION:As practitioners working in a range of sectors\, it can be difficult to understand the intersection of family violence/elder abuse\, dementia/capacity\, ageing and health and its impact on an older person. Recognising this is vital in supporting them and supporting them to address the harm and to keep them safe. Any intervention requires a multifaceted service sector response. \nThis webinar will discuss the challenges in identifying and supporting older people with cognitive impairment who are experiencing elder abuse and highlights the importance of a collaborative service response to meet the varying individual needs of the older person. \nClick here for more information and to register

SUMMARY:Inspiring Men to Engage 'CHANGE' | AASW
DESCRIPTION:The workshop provides an opportunity to learn in a practical and engaging presentation some of the tools David Nugent has implemented for the last 20 years with hundreds of men. \nDavid will demonstrate his successful blueprint of engaging men: inspiring men to look at themselves and take responsibility for what they can change rather than blaming\, making excuses\, or justifying their abusive behaviour. David’s approach does not condemn men; but works to empower them to become better men\, better partners\, better fathers\, and role models in our community. \nThis workshop is for Allied Health professionals\, Counsellors\, Social Workers\, Psychologist\, or anyone working in the space of Domestic/Family Violence. \nFor more information and to register\, click here

SUMMARY:A shift in practice: How to effectively engage with domestically violent fathers | AASW
DESCRIPTION:Current responses to DFV have focused on addressing the safety and wellbeing needs of victims/survivors. However\, each week one woman is murdered\, and every fortnight one child dies in the context of domestic and family violence (DFV). 1.6 million women in Australia have experienced physical or sexualized violence from a current or ex-partner since the age of 15 years. So where are we going wrong and what can we as practitioners do differently to address this issue? \nThe Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence highlighted that in order to prevent and respond to DFV\, the legal and service system needs to widen the gaze and engage men who have or are at risk of perpetrating violence and coercive control. Social workers play a key role in prevention and response efforts and often work in services that could engage domestically violent men. However\, this often does not happen and opportunities to adequately assess risk and possibly invite behavioural change are missed. This workshop will draw from contemporary national and international research and practice experience to consider key strategies that social workers can practically apply to engage with and increase the visibility of men who use violence and coercive control. \nWho should attend?  Emerging and evolving social workers working in settings that provide services to individuals and families experiencing DFV. More experienced social workers who would like to update their knowledge and enhance their skills are also welcome
