SUMMARY:Webinar: Listening to children when they are children | ANROWS
DESCRIPTION:Listening to children when they are children will be the fifth instalment of our webinar series unpacking the ways of working and ways of knowing set out in The Australian National Research Agenda to End Violence against Women and Children (ANRA) 2023–2028. \nIt’s a way of working that focuses on the importance of engaging children and young people in research who are victim-survivors of domestic family violence (DFV). \nChildren and young people are victim-survivors in their own right\, and including their voices can bring added depth and insight into research. \nWhile there are challenges and additional considerations in safely engaging children and young people in research\, they do not outweigh the positive and validating benefits children and young people get in having their voices and opinions heard. \nJoin our webinar\, where panellists will: \n\nHighlight the importance and benefits of engaging with children and young people as part of the research process\nDiscuss the process issues that researchers encounter and how to overcome them\nDiscuss their experiences of working with children\, young people and researchers\nRecommend practical tips and advice on how to communicate and establish positive working relationships with children and young people for research\n\nThe panel discussion will be followed with a live Q&A. You can also submit questions ahead of time when you register. \nThis webinar will have live captions and will be recorded and uploaded to the ANROWS website and YouTube channel. \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Webinar: Valuing practitioners’ expertise in domestic\, family and sexual violence research | ANROWS
DESCRIPTION:ANROWS announces the third instalment of our webinar series unpacking the ways of working and ways of knowing set out in The Australian National Research Agenda to End Violence against Women and Children (ANRA) 2023–2028. \nThe Research Agenda describes practitioners’ expertise as essential in all phases of domestic\, family and sexual violence (DFSV) research and evaluation\, including design to data collection to implementation. \n“Practitioner expertise” goes beyond frontline DFSV roles and includes police\, courts\, housing\, education\, finance\, and other services that intersect with victim-survivors and people who use violence. \nPractitioners bring deep\, real world knowledge that can strengthen research design\, shape measurable outcomes and highlight ethical considerations. \nJoin Miranda Moir\, Brodie Evans\, Skye Trudgett\, and Karen Iles for a panel conversation exploring: \n\nHow to challenge the idea that practitioner-led research and evaluation is ‘less than’\nWhat it means to engage practitioners meaningfully\, ethically\, and sustainably\nHow we can better recognise and value practitioners’ expertise across the system\n\nThe discussion will be followed with a live Q&A. SUMMARY:ANROWS Conference 2025 | Centring children and young people to end violence
DESCRIPTION:Join us to listen\, learn and act\, as we gather with a shared purpose:  \nTo centre children and young people at the heart of the work to end domestic\, family and sexual violence.\nToo often\, children and young people are overlooked in conversations about domestic\, family and sexual violence\, dismissed as too young to understand or too resilient to be affected. But this is not the reality. Children are not passive bystanders\, and the impact of violence does not fade with time – it shapes their future. \nBridging the gap between knowledge and action requires a conscious commitment to acknowledge children and young people and to centre them actively in practice. ANROWS is Australia’s trusted voice on domestic\, family and sexual violence. As Australia’s only conference of its kind\, this event uniquely brokers knowledge for policy and practice through a focus on centring the voices of children and young people. \nPolicymakers\, service providers\, practitioners\, researchers and advocates will come together to listen to young voices\, learn from their lived experiences\, and act boldly to integrate their perspectives into policies\, practices and systems. \n Register here

SUMMARY:Towards meaningful engagement: Embedding victims’ and survivors’ lived expertise in the co-production of research\, policy and practice | ANROWS
DESCRIPTION:Victims and survivors of gender-based violence are increasingly being engaged in the co-production of research\, policy and practice. The aim of engaging victims and survivors is to ensure that the work of the domestic and family violence (DFV) sector benefits from their insights and meets their needs. However\, there can often be a gap between the promise of co-production and what is delivered in practice. \nThis webinar will be invaluable to anyone in the DFV sector wanting to embed lived expertise in the co-production of research\, policy and practice. It will unpack new research which explores the role of victims and survivors in developing policy and best practice mechanisms for engagement. Panellists will discuss co-production and co-design in research\, policy and practice\, including how barriers\, such as power imbalances\, can be overcome and opportunities for best practice. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Family law parenting orders\, breaches and their impact on children | ANROWS
DESCRIPTION:What drives non-compliance with family law parenting orders? This webinar launches the second and final report within Compliance with and enforcement of family law parenting orders. Conducted with the Australian Institute of Family Studies\, this research examines how the parenting order enforcement regime is working in Australia. It does so by pulling together a range of perspectives\, from the views of parents and carers\, and legal professionals as well as judicial insights from court files. This research demonstrates that when parenting orders fail to take children’s views into account\, or family violence makes them unsafe to comply with\, these factors can be drivers of non-compliance.

SUMMARY:How a human rights framework challenges gendered perspectives | ANROWS
DESCRIPTION:Alice Tay Lecture on Law & Human Rights: Padma Raman\, PSM\, & ANROWS CEO on ‘How a human rights framework challenges gendered perspectives’. \nViolence against women and children is a pervasive human rights issue in Australia. The current state of this crisis requires us all to think boldly and collectively about change. Taking a human rights perspective on violence against women is one way to sharpen our focus around accountability for the safety and dignity of all people. It can also pose critical challenges to deeply embedded ways of thinking. \nIn this lecture\, Padma Raman\, PSM and CEO of ANROWS\, will explore how human rights frameworks can complement and challenge gendered perspectives\, and the role of rigorous research in developing an evidence base to inform our actions.

SUMMARY:Listen up! Hear from young people about their understandings of domestic violence | ANROWS
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 National Community Attitudes towards Violence Against Women Survey (NCAS) found that although young people have a good overall understanding of domestic violence\, in particular its physical forms\, there were also some “areas of concern” within young people’s understandings. \nTo better understand these findings\, the forthcoming ANROWS qualitative research study “It depends on what the definition of domestic violence is”: How young people conceptualise domestic violence and abuse explores how young people define and make sense of domestic violence in their own terms. \nFacilitated by Body Safety Australia and featuring a panel of young people passionate about preventing violence against women\, this webinar will unpack the report’s findings and their implications for policy and practice. \nBy centring young people’s voices and knowledge of domestic violence\, this research and webinar will be of value for policymakers and practitioners developing relevant\, consistent and effective education\, policy and primary prevention initiatives aimed at preventing and reducing violence against women. \nFacilitators:  \nDeanne Carson\, CEO and Founder of Body Safety Australia and Lauren French\, Lead Educator\, Body Safety Australia \n  \nPresenters: \n\nDr Erin Carlisle\, Senior Research Officer\, ANROWS\nAlesha Saeed\, R4Respect Youth Ambassador\nZac Tuialli\, Men4Respect Youth Ambassador\nJean Lewis\, Youth advocate\, NSW\nMalika\, Queensland Family and Child Commission Youth Advisory Council\n\nThere will be a live Q&A at the end of the session. \nThe webinar is open to anyone and free to attend. SUMMARY:What we know about intimate partner homicide | ANROWS
DESCRIPTION:What we know about intimate partner homicide in Australia is\, overwhelmingly\, what we know about intimate partner homicide offenders. Insight into victims is crucially lacking\, and there is in addition an overreliance on sentencing remarks in understanding the circumstances surrounding these lethal incidents\, due to the lack of quality and consistent data that can be extracted from the results of coronial inquests. \nThis webinar follows on from the 2022 ANROWS Conference Evidence Presentation on the same topic. The panellists will unpack the available data on intimate partner homicide\, address the gaps in our knowledge of these homicides and discuss the need for institutional and professional accountability when it comes to preventing the intimate partner homicide deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims. \nFacilitator: Padma Raman PSM\, CEO\, ANROWS \nPresenters: \n\nAnna Butler\, Manager\, NSW Domestic Violence Death Review Team\, Department of Communities and Justice (and member of the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Death Review Network)\nDr Hayley Boxall\, Research Manager\, Violence against Women and Children Research Program\, Australian Institute of Criminology\nDr Kyllie Cripps\, Scientia Associate Professor\, Faculty of Law and Justice and Co-Convenor of the Gendered Violence Research Network\, University of New South Wales\n\nThere will be a live Q&A at the end of the session. \nThe webinar is open to anyone and free to attend.
