SUMMARY:Creating Connection Series: Understanding Young People With Autism 1 of 2 | The Centre
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is the first in a series of two. \nCreating Connection Series: Young People—Understanding Young People With Autism introduces a range of innovative techniques for better understanding\, communicating with\, and meeting the needs of young people with autism. \nThe workshop approaches the topic of autism through the lens of information—how do neurotypical people and neurodivergent people experience the world around them? It guides participants to closely examine their own sensory experience of the world—what is ‘normal’ for us\, and what do we take for granted about our own senses? \nUsing the categories in the formal definition of autism as a starting point\, we explore how each common characteristic of autism – from social awkwardness to sensory sensitivities – can be understood as different ways of processing information. We demonstrate a variety of techniques to help a non-autistic person understand what it is like to be autistic. \nLearning outcomes: \n\nUnderstand the key characteristics of autism\, drawing on the latest research\nConnect scientific knowledge about autism with outward behaviour\nAcquire a range of techniques to communicate about autism with parents and carer\n\nIntended audience: \nThis workshop is designed for practitioners who support parents and carers of children and young people with autism. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Responding to Suicides in the Context of Intimate Partner Violence | ShantiWorks
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the complex relationship between suicide and intimate partner violence\, examining the tensions\, challenges and opportunities in policy and practice. It is devastating when an intimate partner violence victim takes their own life because they are subject to such torment\, pain and entrapment. To prevent such suicides\, it is essential to strengthen coordinated responses to both victims and perpetrators. \nThrough the lens of social entrapment and coercive control\, we will explore how patterns of threat and risk posed by perpetrators of intimate partner violence can lead to suicide by victims. Using Jane Monckton-Smith’s 8-stage timeline of coerced suicide\, this workshop will encourage critical reflection and practice possibilities to strengthen risk assessment\, safety planning\, multi-agency cooperation\, and documentation. \nThis workshop will: \n\nShare current local data and evidence about intimate partner suicides.\nFacilitate learnings from Professor Jane Monckton Smith’s work on the 8-stage intimate partner suicide timeline.\nNote the ways perpetrators tactically use threats to suicide and what this means for ongoing control and entrapment in the lives of victims.\nProvide possibilities to expose social entrapment in our risk assessment to intervene and disrupt the constraints that intimate partner violence inflicts on victims\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:How is Neurodiversity (mis)Understood and (mis)Treated in the Law and by Psychiatry?
DESCRIPTION:To what extent is neurodiversity pathologised and criminalised in Victoria? Why are neurodiverse people policed\, incarcerated\, misdiagnosed and institutionalised (and why do we have our human rights curtailed) at much higher rates than neurotypical people? \nFor those of us who have been arrested and incarcerated or admitted and institutionalised\, it seems obvious neither our criminal justice nor our mental health systems are neurodiversity-informed or -responsive. Neurodivergent folk are significantly over-represented in Victoria’s mental health and criminal justice systems\, constituting at least 50% of all people incarcerated or institutionalised. Many of us who find ourselves in institutional care are un- or mis-diagnosed\, and our treatment may be profoundly inappropriate as a consequence. \nRegister here: How is Neurodiversity (mis)Understood and (mis)Treated in the Law and by Psychiatry?
