SUMMARY:Webinar: Trauma prevention and early intervention approaches with children and young people | AIFS & Emerging Minds
DESCRIPTION:The Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS) reinforced what many in the child and family sector had long suspected – most children and young people (62%) experience at least one form of abuse or neglect before the age of eighteen.1 \nFrom a wellbeing perspective\, we know that these children are more than twice as likely to develop mental health disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder\, anxiety\, depression and problematic alcohol consumption. \nTrauma prevention and early intervention of child maltreatment approaches are critical to the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. Drawing on the expertise of Professor Daryl Higgins\, a key researcher in the ACMS\, and Shankari Sundaram\, a counsellor at Rebuild – Relationships Australia South Australia\, this webinar will outline strategies that practitioners\, organisations and systems can use to contribute to trauma prevention and early intervention. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Turning the Page: A New Chapter in Ending Family Violence
DESCRIPTION:We’re proud to welcome two exceptional guest speakers\, Tammy Casselson and Anastasia Sagris-Desmond\, co-authors of “The Grimmest of FairyTales\,” who will lead an insightful and thought-provoking talk about an issue that touches every community\, family\, domestic and sexual violence. SUMMARY:2025 Queer Displacements Conference | Forcibly Displaced People Network
DESCRIPTION:The Queer Displacements Conference\, held biannually since 2019\, is the first and only event in the Asia-Pacific region that focuses on the intersectional challenges and solutions for LGBTIQA+ forcibly displaced people. It offers a unique platform to foreground the voices and lived experiences of LGBTIQA+ people\, building awareness\, solidarity\, and alliances to achieve justice\, protection\, and sustainable solutions. \n  \nDesigned with a methodology that centers lived experiences beyond storytelling\, the conference provides full scholarships to LGBTIQA+ displaced individuals\, ensuring their participation shapes the discussions and outcomes. Combining presentations and stakeholder engagements\, it promotes action-oriented results within a trauma-informed framework. \n  \nBuilding on the success of previous conferences\, the 2025 Queer Displacements Conference will focus on the Asia-Pacific region\, where the intersection of forced displacement and criminalisation of LGBTIQA+ identities presents significant challenges. Many countries in the region host large refugee populations while criminalising LGBTIQA+ identities\, making safe identification and refugee status determination extremely difficult. The conference will explore innovative solutions through leadership\, advocacy\, and regional collaboration.

SUMMARY:Webinar: AVITH in Context
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Dr Ashlee Curtis and Dr Travis Harries will discuss their recent research into substance-involved child-to-parent violence (SU-CPV). \nChild-to-parent violence (CPV) is associated with youth substance problems; however\, few studies have explored the familial context surrounding substance-involved CPV. \nKey findings from this research include associations between parental monitoring\, parental intrusiveness\, affective reactivity\, concurrent reactive CPV and SU-CPV in an Australian community sample of caregivers. \nYou can also view the associated article on parent’s substance use and child-to-parent violence. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Unpacking Netflix's Adolescence: building healthier masculinities in today’s online world | NAPCAN
DESCRIPTION:What’s really going on behind the screens of young people today? This confronting yet essential webinar dives deep into the hidden worlds of online subcultures that glorify misogyny and gendered violence. Building on the conversations started by the hit Netflix series Adolescence\, we’ll explore how these toxic narratives are spreading across social media\, gaming\, and online communities\, shaping beliefs\, behaviours\, and even national security responses. Hear from experts in education\, policy\, tech\, and youth safety as we unpack how violent misogyny is taking root\, why respectful relationships education (like NAPCAN’s Love Bites) is more urgent than ever\, and how families\, schools\, and platforms can work together to intervene early. We’ll also be discussing what real accountability from tech companies should look like. If you care about the digital world young people are growing up in\, this webinar is for you. SUMMARY:Webinar: Preventing childhood emotional abuse: Prioritising action | AIFS
DESCRIPTION:National Child Protection Week (NCPW) is a big week for the sector and we’re very proud to be partnering with the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) for another important webinar. \nThis year we’ll be picking up the conversation from the NCPW webinar from 2023 on childhood emotional abuse. \nThe theme for NCPW 2025 is Shifting Conversations to Action. In line with this theme\, our expert panel will be focussing on practical ways we as a sector can improve our response to this harmful form of child maltreatment – particularly through parental support. \nAccording to the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS)\, approximately 35% of young people aged 16–24 have experienced emotional abuse. Findings from the ACMS also suggest the prevalence of this form of abuse is increasing with higher rates among younger cohorts (16–24 years) than among older cohorts (25–44 years and 45 years and older). \nEmotional abuse contributes to a range of social\, physical and psychological issues. However\, despite its high prevalence and associated poor outcomes\, emotional abuse remains poorly understood across much of the child and family sector. \nThis webinar will explore some of the risk factors of childhood emotional abuse\, including parental stress and burnout\, and discuss how to recognise\, respond to and prevent this form of maltreatment – with a focus of empathising with the parents you work with and understanding why they might be engaging with their children in this way. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Creating Connection Series: Understanding Young People With Autism 1 of 2 | The Centre
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is the first in a series of two. \nCreating Connection Series: Young People—Understanding Young People With Autism introduces a range of innovative techniques for better understanding\, communicating with\, and meeting the needs of young people with autism. \nThe workshop approaches the topic of autism through the lens of information—how do neurotypical people and neurodivergent people experience the world around them? It guides participants to closely examine their own sensory experience of the world—what is ‘normal’ for us\, and what do we take for granted about our own senses? \nUsing the categories in the formal definition of autism as a starting point\, we explore how each common characteristic of autism – from social awkwardness to sensory sensitivities – can be understood as different ways of processing information. We demonstrate a variety of techniques to help a non-autistic person understand what it is like to be autistic. \nLearning outcomes\n\nUnderstand the key characteristics of autism\, drawing on the latest research\nConnect scientific knowledge about autism with outward behaviour\nAcquire a range of techniques to communicate about autism with parents and carers\n\nIntended audience\nThis workshop is designed for practitioners who support parents and carers of children and young people with autism.
