DESCRIPTION:This three-hour virtual interactive training provides foundational knowledge in understanding family violence and responding to disclosures of family violence. It prepares participants to recognise indicators of family violence\, ask questions and provide a safe\, simple and sensitive response to a disclosure from an adult victim survivor experiencing family violence. \nThe training covers foundational family violence concepts necessary to support an effective response including definitions\, dynamics and impacts. It covers knowledge and skills required to recognise indicators\, ask questions about family violence and respond effectively to disclosures. Participants will identify pathways for referral and key questions to prompt the development of a safety plan.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Joint MAEVe and UoM Criminology Seminar\, where visiting Professor Nicole Westmarland presents on “Spiking – broadening understandings to improve research and responses” \nIn-person and online tickets available! \nLocation: Linkway Meeting Room\, Level 4\, John Medley Building (Building 191)\, Parkville Campus\, University of Melbourne \nOnline: Zoom link provided upon registration \nAbstract\nSpiking refers to when a person uses alcohol (including putting alcohol or more alcohol into a drink without a person’s consent)\, prescription or over-­ the-­ counter drugs (such as sleeping tablets)\, and/or illegal drugs (such as cocaine\, GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate)\, or ketamine) to drug or poison a person without their consent. Drink spiking is the most common form of spiking\, but other items including food\, cigarettes\, vapes\, and needles/syringes can also be spiked. This presentation explores how the 2021 ‘needle spiking’ concerns unfolded in the UK\, what we know about it (using police data and victim interviews)\, and how this can be used as a springboard to rethink previous and future research and responses to all forms of spiking.\n \nPresenter Bio \nNicole Westmarland is Professor of Criminology at Durham University where she is also the Director of the Durham Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA). She has conducted over 50 research and consultancy projects in the field of domestic and sexual violence. DESCRIPTION:Suicidal ideation refers to thoughts about endings one’s life. These thoughts can be once-off or reoccurring. Childhood suicidal ideation is a growing public health issue in Australia. In 2023\, Kids Helpline reported that suicide-related concerns was the third most common reason a child or young person (5-18 years) reached out to the service\, accounting for 17% of service contacts. Although most suicide-related counselling contact is from 15 to 18 year olds\, an increasing number of younger children\, some as young as 7\, are seeking suicide-related support. \nAlthough suicidal ideation does not mean a child will take their own life\, it can be extremely distressing for the child and their family. Childhood suicidal ideation is a complex issue and one that practitioners are increasingly encountering in their work. \nUsing a case scenario – a hypothetical situation used for educational purposes – panellists will reflect on some of the ethical considerations that practitioners need to consider when responding to children and families and provide practical strategies to help practitioners better understand and support children experiencing suicidal ideation. \nThe webinar will discuss how practitioners can foster connection\, seek the child’s insights\, and recognise the child’s and the families’ strength. \nThis webinar will give you: \n\na better understanding of the experiences of distress and despair that can lead to childhood suicidal ideation\ninsight into the ethical considerations that need to be considered when responding to childhood suicidal ideation\nan understanding of how to apply a collaborative and curious approach to support connection and understanding between the child and their family\ninsight into how to recognise and highlight children’s ideas\, values and skills in managing their challenges\n\nThis webinar will be of interest to practitioners working with children and families. \nRegister here
