SUMMARY:Let’s keep kids in the picture: family violence hurts children too | NAPCAN
DESCRIPTION:This discussion will explore what the impacts of experiencing\, or being exposed to\, family and domestic violence means for children. \nWhile Australia has been having a deeper look at violence against women and shedding more light on what is needed to prevent it\, we need to make sure we keep kids in the picture. Children experience violence in the home differently to adults and these experiences can shape their future relationships and health outcomes. \nThe presenters will discuss how we keep prevention of harm to children a priority in the family and domestic violence space. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Let’s partner for better outcomes: How the national Safe and Supported Framework and Action Plans are shifting outcomes for children and their families | NAPCAN
DESCRIPTION:Children thrive in safe and supported communities. In 2023\, the first Action Plans for the Safe & Supported: National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children were released. \nIn this webinar\, those closely involved in leading this work will discuss how these action plans will make a difference to the lives of children and their families across Australia. \nIn particular we are excited to hear about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander First Action Plan which was developed with First Nations young people\, families and organisations. It has a focus on early intervention and prevention measures at a child\, family and system level which is crucial to keeping more First Nations families together and safe. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Preventing emotional abuse of children: The role of parenting support | AIFS
DESCRIPTION:Recent research suggests emotional abuse in childhood is highly prevalent and contributes to a range of physical\, social and psychological problems. Despite this\, emotional abuse in childhood is poorly understood compared to other forms of child maltreatment\, such as physical or sexual abuse\, and is often overlooked in practice settings. \nIn partnership with the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) as part of National Child Protection Week\, this webinar aims to contribute to the dialogue on this years’ theme of ‘where we start matters’. \nThis webinar will interest practitioners working in child and family services\, child protection\, family law\, parenting and relationship services\, health and education. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Preventing emotional abuse of children: The role of parenting support | NAPCAN
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS). \nThis webinar will explore emotional abuse in childhood and the role of parenting support in reducing and preventing child maltreatment. \nDespite its high prevalence\, emotional abuse is less well-known than other forms of child maltreatment\, including physical or sexual abuse. \nRecently\, the Australian Child Maltreatment Study found that in young people aged 16-24 years\, about 35% had previously experienced emotional abuse\, with the rate 1.5 times higher among girls than boys. The study also found that 40% of young women experienced emotional abuse before age 18. Furthermore\, individuals who experienced emotional abuse in childhood were 2.3 times more likely to have attempted suicide in the past 12 months\, 2.1 times more likely to have self-harmed and were 1.8 times more likely to be cannabis dependent\, even after accounting for other experiences of maltreatment. \nDespite being traumatising and contributing to a range of physical\, social and psychological problems\, experiences of emotional abuse are often minimised and overlooked in service settings. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Let’s hear from young people: What’s missing from education on relationships\, consent and sex? | NAPCAN
DESCRIPTION:Young voices are an essential – but often missing – ingredient in preventing abuse. \nWhile the Australian Child Maltreatment Study shows that Australia’s prevention efforts have made progress in reducing some types of child sexual abuse\, peer-to-peer abuse has increased\, as has childhood exposure to domestic violence. \nIn this webinar\, we hand over the microphone to young people themselves to hear what they have to say around questions such as: \n\nwhat’s still missing from sex\, consent and respectful relationship education\nwhat’s working and what’s not?\nwhat do young people need adults to know?\nhow can we all work together to support young people and keep them safe from harm?\n\nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Let’s talk about the dollars: Are we being clever in how we invest in keeping children safe and well? | NAPCAN
DESCRIPTION:There are significant costs associated with child abuse and neglect. \nIn this webinar we will speak with key thinkers who help unpack the myths around the economic and structural costs associated with child abuse. \nWe know there are deeply harmful personal and social costs to experiencing abuse\, but what about the significant cost of child protection and related social services? Is this spending effective in keeping children safe and well? \nOr can we – should we – restructure our investment to enable better outcomes for children and their families? \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Let’s get our words right: how to craft messages that drive child abuse prevention | NAPCAN
DESCRIPTION:To prevent child abuse and neglect\, we need to get our messaging right. \nWe need everyone in the community – especially decision-makers – to understand the rates of abuse\, the impacts\, and what needs to be done. \nNaturally\, it’s tempting to lead with the shocking statistics. However\, evidence shows that this can backfire by triggering feelings of fatalism and overwhelm. \nIn this webinar we’ll learn how just a few simple changes to our words and their order can make a huge difference\, and help to shift thinking: \n\nFrom fatalism to agency (‘child abuse is preventable’)\nFrom ‘them/othering’ to ‘us’ (‘child abuse impacts the whole community’)\nFrom individualism to collectivism (‘the solutions lie in whole-of-community action’)\n\nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Supporting children and young people bereaved by domestic homicide | AIFS
DESCRIPTION:The murder of a child’s parent in the context of domestic violence is a traumatic experience that has immediate and long-term effects on a child’s social\, emotional and cognitive development. Children and young people may experience ongoing distress\, safety concerns and family conflict. Many also face the loss of the perpetrator parent. \nAlthough supporting these children and young people is critical\, there are no evidence-based guidelines to determine who is best placed to care for them or how. Decisions about their lives are often made by family\, the police\, child protection and other professionals with little input from the children themselves.\nThe voices of these survivors – as children and as adults – are crucial to developing a greater understanding of their experiences in relation to living arrangements\, family and peer relationships and wellbeing. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Addressing Male Sexism & Entitlement in FV Perpetrator Programs | Northside Counselling Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Interactive discussions about sexism and the impact this has on women who work with male colleagues in family violence perpetrator programs. \nThese reflective practice discussions are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in 2023. \nBetween each session\, at least another 4 women will be murdered by a current or former male partner by their use of family violence. Since these figures are not changing from year to year\, the need for practitioners to address gender injustices in our personal lives\, not just our work\, becomes even more necessary. \nIn order for us to invite other men to examine and explore themes such as male privilege\, male entitled belief systems\, male sexism and misogyny- themes at the heart of men’s oppression of women- we must examine them first ourselves and openly discuss how our own entitlements over women’s bodies\, choices and rights get enacted in our relationships with female colleagues\, partners and family members\, as well as women generally and other genders usually targeted by male violence and misogyny. \nBy discussing and exposing male privilege and entitlement\, practitioners can challenge and address the risk reinforcing harmful gender and power-based messages in our daily practices. These conversations can be complex and require ongoing supportive spaces like these for men to discuss gender in a way that is purposeful\, mobilising and informed by feminist and anti-oppressive ideas. \nPractitioners from all sectors are invited to attend and participate actively with purpose. \nThis is NOT a men’s only space. This is not group therapy and people of all genders are encouraged to come along. \nZoom meeting link will be sent via email after registration and just before the event. Please allow for your zoom audio and visual functions to be working during the session. \nThis event is brought to you by Anthony Lekkas from northsidecounsellingsolutions.com

DESCRIPTION:This training explores the impact on children witnessing/experiencing abuse and how to shift the focus of interventions to the father’s responsibility and accountability for safe parenting. It unpacks broader narratives that will often attribute responsibility for safety\, security\, and emotional wellbeing of children to the victim-survivor; and is underpinned by the current evidence base that has established an understanding of the gender drivers of men’s violence against women. \nClick here to register
