SUMMARY:International Women's Day

International Women’s Day was first born out of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. \nSince those early days\, International Women’s Day has grown in prominence and reach\, touching women in every corner of the world. SUMMARY:Family violence\, mental health and trauma among South Asian migrant women | MAEVe
DESCRIPTION:The experiences of South Asian victim-survivors centred around dowry exploitation and related violence with profound mental health impacts. \nWhat are the roles of globalisation\, culture\, migration\, acculturation stress\, in causation of family domestic violence and its impacts on mental health? Marriage is an essential\, defining moment in many women’s lives\, but it’s not always a happy one\, be it in India or elsewhere in the world—including Australia. \nThe young immigrant women are particularly vulnerable. The South Asian immigrant victim-survivors in my psychiatric practice often suffer from violence that is related to dowry exploitation\, triggered by lack of satisfaction with dowry amounts given at the wedding\, and ongoing demands for cash\, gold gifts etc \, financial exploitation\, and domestic servitude. \nThis presentation is suitable to all those interested in the family violence research and service sector e.g. mental health advocates/workers\, community service providers and the general public. \nFor more information and to register\, click here

SUMMARY:Addressing Male Sexism & Entitlement in FV Perpetrator Programs | Northside Counselling Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Interactive discussions about sexism and the impact this has on women who work with male colleagues in family violence perpetrator programs. \nThese reflective practice discussions are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in 2023. \nBetween each session\, at least another 4 women will be murdered by a current or former male partner by their use of family violence. Since these figures are not changing from year to year\, the need for practitioners to address gender injustices in our personal lives\, not just our work\, becomes even more necessary. \nIn order for us to invite other men to examine and explore themes such as male privilege\, male entitled belief systems\, male sexism and misogyny- themes at the heart of men’s oppression of women- we must examine them first ourselves and openly discuss how our own entitlements over women’s bodies\, choices and rights get enacted in our relationships with female colleagues\, partners and family members\, as well as women generally and other genders usually targeted by male violence and misogyny. \nBy discussing and exposing male privilege and entitlement\, practitioners can challenge and address the risk reinforcing harmful gender and power-based messages in our daily practices. These conversations can be complex and require ongoing supportive spaces like these for men to discuss gender in a way that is purposeful\, mobilising and informed by feminist and anti-oppressive ideas. \nPractitioners from all sectors are invited to attend and participate actively with purpose. \nThis is NOT a men’s only space. This is not group therapy and people of all genders are encouraged to come along. \nZoom meeting link will be sent via email after registration and just before the event. Please allow for your zoom audio and visual functions to be working during the session. \nThis event is brought to you by Anthony Lekkas from northsidecounsellingsolutions.com

SUMMARY:Invitation to Participate: Family Violence Best Practice Crisis Response Research | Safe Steps
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to take part in an independent research project led by Safe Steps on family violence best practice crisis response\, as practitioners who provide crisis support to family violence victim survivors. The research project is one of the 13 projects funded under the Family Violence Research Grants Program by Family Safety Victoria. \nThis research aims to better understand the existing practice framework dealing with family violence emergencies and to identify areas for improvement. Safe Steps is particularly interested in mapping where this does and does not align with the experience of those who are intended to benefit from existing policies and practices. Each focus group will be limited to 6 or less practitioners. The focus group will run for one to one and a half hour and take place online via Zoom. \nExpress your interest here \nAccess Participation Information Sheet here \nSafe Steps also want to work with a small group of victim-survivors who are experts by experience to help identify barriers and enablers when accessing crisis support.  Their participation will involve attending an online focus group (around 60-90 minutes). \nThose interested can express interest here \nAccess Victim-Survivor Participant Information Sheet here
