SUMMARY:SPARK Webinar - Safe & Together: working at the speed of trust
DESCRIPTION:As the NSW government considered implementing the Safe & Together ™ framework\, they had one critical question: Is it culturally safe? \nThis SPARK webinar invites Queensland domestic and family violence practitioners into a critical and thoughtful conversation about the Safe & Together Framework through an Aboriginal lens . Drawing on ALFIES\, a NSW-based research project funded by NSW Health Ministry of Health PARVAN in partnership with Melbourne University exploring whole of family approaches\, members of the research team will share what they learned from working alongside Aboriginal communities and practitioners\, and how the model can be thoughtfully adapted to better reflect Aboriginal ways of keeping families safe\, strong and connected. \nSafe & Together has been embedded across Queensland for many years and has been the subject of substantial local and national research. Yet questions and critiques have persisted\, particularly about how accountability focused practice sits alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander priorities for holistic healing\, cultural responsibility and keeping families together. This webinar creates space to explore those tensions honestly and to reflect on emerging evidence that\, when modified and applied with cultural authority\, leadership and collaboration\, Safe & Together can support more effective and culturally responsive practice. \nThis webinar offers grounded insights\, practical reflections and prompts for discussion about what these findings might mean for practice in Queensland. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging webinar where researchers present the main findings from recent Australian research exploring an infant and child-led therapeutic approach delivered in situ alongside key workers supporting families identified as at risk. \n  \nThe session will draw on the article The impact of using an infant and child-led therapeutic approach in providing in situ consultations and transferable learnings to key workers working with families identified as at risk: A retrospective Australian study by Wendy Bunston\, Maureen Long\, Margarita Frederico\, Samantha Ware and Ania O’Brien. Read the article here. \nAbout the webinar \nIn this webinar\, the research team will present a case study illustrating the child-led therapeutic approach and reflect on the implications for practitioners and services working with families. The session will also consider how the model supports learning transfer to frontline workers and why child-centred\, relationship-based practice matters in everyday service contexts. \nWhy this research matters \nInfants and young children are often the reason services become involved with families experiencing risk (e.g. family violence\, child protection concerns)\, yet their voices are frequently overlooked in everyday practice. This research shows that centering infants and children\, explicitly and practically\, improves family engagement\, deepens worker empathy\, and strengthens practice\, even when time and resources are limited. \n  \nCore practice message: You do not need to be a therapist to work therapeutically.\nFrontline workers can bring a powerful infant‑ and child‑led lens into everyday interactions by slowing down\, observing\, wondering\, and keeping the child’s perspective central—with or without a specialist present. \nWhat “infant‑ and child‑led” means in practice \nAn infant‑ and child‑led approach complements (rather than replaces) safety\, case planning and statutory responsibilities. The approach: \n\nTreats infants and children as subjects with agency\, not just dependents.\nActively invites their presence into conversations—in the room and “in all participants’ minds”.\nUses behaviour\, play\, movement and emotion as communication.\nPositions children as powerful motivators for hope and change within families.\n\nThis webinar will be relevant to: \n\npractitioners\nprogram managers\nresearchers\, policymakers\nanyone interested in infant mental health\, family support\, child-centred practice\, and service responses for families.\n\nRegister to hear directly from the researchers and practitioners about the study’s findings\, practical implications\, and opportunities for strengthening infant and child-led work across family and early years services. \nRegister here
