DESCRIPTION:This workshop is the first in a series of two. \nCreating Connection Series: Young People—Understanding Young People With Autism introduces a range of innovative techniques for better understanding\, communicating with\, and meeting the needs of young people with autism. \nThe workshop approaches the topic of autism through the lens of information—how do neurotypical people and neurodivergent people experience the world around them? It guides participants to closely examine their own sensory experience of the world—what is ‘normal’ for us\, and what do we take for granted about our own senses? \nUsing the categories in the formal definition of autism as a starting point\, we explore how each common characteristic of autism – from social awkwardness to sensory sensitivities – can be understood as different ways of processing information. We demonstrate a variety of techniques to help a non-autistic person understand what it is like to be autistic. \nLearning outcomes\n\nUnderstand the key characteristics of autism\, drawing on the latest research\nConnect scientific knowledge about autism with outward behaviour\nAcquire a range of techniques to communicate about autism with parents and carers\n\nIntended audience\nThis workshop is designed for practitioners who support parents and carers of children and young people with autism.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop is the second and final in a series of two. \nCreating Connection Series: Young People – Supporting Young People with Autism covers a range of strategies to build parental/carer capacity to manage the behaviour of and teach self-management to children and young people with autism. \nBuilding on the workshop Creating Connections: Understanding Young People with Autism\, this workshop covers a range of strategies to identify and respond to an autistic person’s needs.  The workshop discusses: \n\nIdentifying signs of sensory overload and techniques to respond\nPlanning the young person’s environment to both reduce overload and allow for sensory seeking\nRelaxation techniques for children and young people\nStrength-based coping strategies\nTips for creating social-story models to help autistic young people carry out tasks\nUnderstanding the complexities of autism and adolescence\n\nLearning outcomes\n\nUnderstand how sensory processing can lead to complex behaviour.\nApply techniques to organise the sensory environment of a young autistic person so that it suits their particular needs.\nRespond to and manage times of sensory overload.\nHow to reflect on complex behaviours and tailor restorative practices.\nSupport autistic people in regulating themselves and managing tasks.\n\nIntended audience\nThis workshop is designed for practitioners who support parents and carers of children and young people with autism.
